Chemvet Newsletter Volume 46: Autumn 2022

16 Mar, 2022

Dear Clients,

Tash (General Manager here at Chemvet) took this great photo whilst visiting clients on King Island last month. Sleek, dark coats, heavy conditioned cattle with green pasture at foot is great to see and indicative of almost all pastoral areas across Australia (although Tash tells me it has been dry down there of late).

Congratulations to Tash for gaining her Paraboss Advisor Certification – more below. With the wet summer continuing into Autumn, parasites are continuing to be an issue. Barbers pole worm is certainly ‘enjoying’ the conditions across many areas, and no doubt up North the tick situation on the first and second musters will show treatment is required. Particularly in seasons like this, the importance of not only quality products, but quality advice is paramount.

The response to the addition of our two tick products, Tickmaster and Tickmaster Plus – whilst being a little late on the scene- has been fantastic. In case you have missedf it, see below for more product detail.

Our product pipeline is growing so keep an eye out for more new products that hopefully will come on stream from the mid-year onwards. For all those who use a long acting Cydectin™ type product in their cattle, keep an eye out for our Cattlemox in the second half of the year.

Products all over the Agvet supply chain have been disrupted over the last couple of years and we have heard of many stockouts affecting farm programs. I’m very proud to say that at Chemvet, because of the proactive strategies we put in place as far back as mid-2020, we have good supply available of all our animal health products.

Recently, we sent an extension email out covering weaner sheep health and production over the autumn and early winter months (a tough period to manage these sheep through). We got a fantastic number of clicks through to the article, however, if you missed it or it went to the junk inbox, the article is on our website (www.chemvet.com.au) under the ‘articles’ tab.

Kind regards,

Murray Grant

The Two A’s for Effective Fluke Treatment

The two months for the most effective treatment of Liver Fluke (Fasciola hepatica) in cattle are the two A’s – April and August. By these months in most liver fluke areas, the majority of fluke picked up by the cattle are in their adult stage and most responsive to treatment. This is the best time to hit them for a six – before they drag down the condition of your cattle.

Get prepared to treat cattle in fluke prone areas with Vetmec F this month for ‘top of the line’ fluke, worm and lice control.

Vetmec Mineral Mix

Following on from Murray’s most recent article about Autumn Weaner Health and Production, we cannot stress the importance of ensuring sheep are provided with sufficient minerals and trace elements. Stemming from a cellular level, this is the fundamental way of ensuring the sheep have the resources to grow, develop and perform at their best.

When we send it pre-mixed into Vetmec LV + Selenium, Vetmec Mineral Mix is an extremely cost effective and labour efficient way of gaining peace of mine that your sheep are ‘taking their vitamins’.

Our star minerals/trace elements for sheep performance:

Copper – required for body, bone and wool growth. Also helps nerve and white blood cell function which is important for immunity.
Cobalt – required for the synthesis of Vitamin B12, energy metablism and feed conversion efficiency.
Iodine – very important in thyroid function and growth hormone regulation. Also plays a role in hoof health and we can add extra iodine to help low the incidence of foot abscess. Or even more iodine to treat and prevent goitre!
Zinc – an important component of many enzymes responsible for protein synthesis – relating to muscle growth, immunity and skin, hair and hoof health.
Selenium (in Vetmec LV) – works with Vitamin E to prevent and repaid cell damage. In addition to their role in immune function, they are vital for growth, reproduction and prevention of White Muscle Disease.

If you have any questions about mineral supplementation, or would like Murray’s Weaner Health Article emailed or posted to you, jus give us a call on 1800 243 683.

Sheep Parasite Management Advisor

At the start of the year, Tash completed the Paraboss Certificate in Sheep Parasite Management – making her a Paraboss accredited advisor. It is recommended to consult an accredited advisor when seeking parasite management advice. In addition to her university degree, the course solidified her knowledge of management of worms, lice and flies in sheep all across Australia. This is exciting for us to be able to expand out ability to offer advice, as well as always having someone available to answer your sheep parasite questions on the phone.

Tag News

Orders

We’re very thankful for everybody who orders their NLIS and management tags through us, and we are especially thankful for the patience of those that have ordered NLIS tags with us over January and February. With Datamars/Z Tags experiencing a few stock outs, some wait times on the Z Tag NLIS Tags were a little longer than usual. But we are seeing the light at the end of the tunnel, so hopefully no more crazy delays!

Keeping that in mind, it may pay to be that little bit extra organised this year when ordering, as we love having your tags ready to go for when marking rolls around!

Out & About

Tash’s Trip to King Island, TAS

Anita Poulsen & her cattle at Lymwood

I was finally able to get on the plane (nd leave Melbourne) over to King Island! It was such a highly anticipated trip, and the destination and people did not disappoint! While it’s quite a lot drier over there at the moment, the cattle were still in great condition which is a credit to the productivity of the land and the people that manage it. There’s always something to look at as you’re driving around the island; so long as you’re concentrating on the bush turkeys, wallabies and not forgetting to wave to everybody that you pass! A big thank you to everybody that lent me their time for a chat, a sandwich and/or a tour, I can’t wait to get on the little plane again (hopefully next time when it’s a bit greener)!
