Dear Clients,
We’re thrilled to be producing our first newsletter of 2025 and this edition is well worth the read! There are some great specials on Vetmec LA, Vetmec F, Vetmec Moxiguard, Tags and Tru-Test products. We’ve also included a full catalogue in this issue to keep on the fridge or in the glove box.
The first thing I wanted to mention is a disease alert for pneumonia in sheep in Victoria. A number of outbreaks have recently been brought to our attention. Cases have all involved weaner sheep, with generally quite high infection percentages. Common scenarios leading to an outbreak are crowding, stress, humid weather and the lambs still carrying a fleece. Signs of pneumonia typically revolve around respiratory distress and death can be rapid. Barber’s Pole and pneumonia have similar symptoms but entirely different treatment and management regimes. The importance of a correct diagnosis, which can be made quickly on a postmortem examination by your veterinarian, is really important to distinguish the conditions. Studies involving vaccines available overseas appear to doubt the effectiveness of a vaccine strategy at this point in time. Please seek help and advice from your veterinarian immediately if you suspect an outbreak of pneumonia in your lambs.
While there are many political, economic and environmental conditions that are out of our control including drought, elections and the threat of potential trade tariffs. Parasite management is something we can remain on the front foot about. Coming out of summer is an easy time to become complacent about worm burdens, especially if conditions have been dry, which is the case across many pastoral regions. Hopefully, this has naturally helped control worm populations. However, any surviving worms or larvae will go ballistic when the autumn break rolls around. Be prepared by having some drench on hand and conducting worm tests if you’re not sure.
I hope you enjoy our autumn newsletter, as always don’t hesitate to give us a call if anything piques your interest that you’d like to chat more about.
Kind regards
Murray

Autumn Pre-Lambing
If you haven’t already organised a pre-lambing drench for Autumn lambing ewes, it’s time to check the shed to make sure you have some on hand. The best time to give a pre-lambing drench is 4 weeks before they’re due to start lambing. Annual clostridial vaccinations should also be given at this time so that the lamb has immunity once they’re born. If you’re unsure about what to use for a pre-lambing drench, give us a call to order some worm test kits or have a chat with Josh or Tash.
